13 Common CEO Blind Spots 

Here are 13 life lessons from overlooked actions, unintentional outcomes, and easily-solvable errors CEOs of all kinds make. 

  • CEOs rush. The energy of rushing is frenetic. Rushing is wildly unscalable.

  • CEOs lack patience. Patience is never found alongside fear. 

  • CEOs stay in wait, looking for confidence. They think it’s a fact when confidence is a feeling. Feelings can be changed with one powerful thought. 

Speaking of thoughts…

  • CEOs don’t mind their mind. They DO a lot instead of investing the time to think. They take massive action producing instead of scaling the thoughts about their future. Ambition is not synonymous with busyness. 

  • CEOs fill their calendar working IN the business instead of ON the business, which is where the FUN is. Seeing empty calendar space triggers them to add more instead of spending time to unwind, meditate, or do what they need to relax to clear out their mind to open space to create bigger things.

  • CEOs have too many product and service offers instead of a laser focus on work in their Zone of Genius. That’s also where the fun is. 

  • CEOs resist loving their numbers, their P&L, and their sales funnel; instead, they create stress, doubt, and dread with them. Don’t fear the numbers. Let your data tell you the story that guides you forward. When you own and love your numbers as you do your closest family member, nothing feels better.

  • CEOs avoid instead of using avoidance as the key to moving toward. What are you avoiding?

  • CEOs lack trust in themselves. It’s a lonely job. That, with a lack of trust, is compounding. Leading is an exercise in personal development. 

  • CEOs get distracted instead of religiously intentional, deliberate, and consistent. Investing in standard operating procedures (SOPs) that the leader is committed to - come whatever disaster of the day hits.

  • CEOs use strategic planning based on current or prior year results to determine the future. They look back on the past instead of planning the future from the future they want. Using the past to dictate the future gets you incrementally more of the same. Outrageous results are not 5% gains. Start from outrageous possibilities.

  • CEOs fall prey to delegating tasks instead of delegating decisions. Leadership is not telling. 

  • The biggest mistake CEOs make is sloppy communication. That’s unclear, missing insight, and filled with ambiguity. This is lazy. Imagine the time lost to the word puzzles. Create mastery with your communication to master your impact.

CEO-ing does not have to be an exhausting endurance test to ace. And, it doesn't benefit from a rat race mindset.

CEO-ing is an art, not a science, that requires intentional discipline and consistency.
