Why leaders must pay attention to what they appreciate

What you appreciate appreciates.

It's easier to focus on what hasn't happened, what results you haven't created, or where you feel stuck.

Even when you accomplish a goal, you celebrate for maybe a second before you criticize yourself for what didn't work.

Where you put your attention is a choice.

When your attention is focused on what’s wrong or not working or what could be better, you generate results from lack. The more attention you give it will create more of it.

When your attention is focused on what HAS WORKED, you create results from a place of generative energy.

In the book, The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist, there’s a short chapter titled "What You Appreciate Appreciates."

The author shares that an appreciation practice puts deliberate attention on what you already have to foster NEW value.

Using appreciation as currency to help you pay your way forward.

She speaks of using appreciation as an inquiry practice, a systematic discovery tool to create positive energy to create more of it.

In my coaching calls, I like to start by asking my clients what’s working. Clients typically come to get coached on what is not working, but starting from a place of what is working helps create a constructive space to consider what’s not working.

Diagnosing what’s working to discover, dream, and design new.

Lynne Twist shares that we must stop chasing solutions beyond our grasp. She says you have everything you need right now, and putting your full attention into an appreciation of what’s already there is the gateway.

“In appreciation of all that we are and already have, we can rest the possibilities, identify a vision, make a commitment, and act on it.”

What you appreciate determines the quality of your life.

What you appreciate compounds.

Whatever you call your intentional practice, having it, incorporating it, and making it intentional and deliberate is a well of value available to you right now that can be used to create new possibilities.

I heard this week on a podcast that 80% of senior leaders believe they recognize their people, and when their people were asked if they were recognized for their work, only 20% of them felt recognized. Double down on your appreciation this week. It’s needed!

Make your appreciation list today, and if you are so inclined, send it back to me at christina@christinalangdon.com. I want to appreciate you and all you’ve accomplished.
