What are you running towards?
In a recent edition of Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper, she shared that at this time in her life, she is running towards the life she wants.
What are you running towards?
Not out of hustle or lack.
I’m talking about that life force, flow state, or even ambitious recklessness brought on by opportunity, wanting, and desire.
I remember the first time I visited my daughter at college six long weeks after drop-off. It felt like a big piece of my heart had broken off.
As I walked across the campus, I spotted her. I got a bolt of energy and started sprinting towards her without thought. Being out of shape didn’t matter. It was a gravitational pull to something (someone) deeply important and defining in my life.
When you run towards something, your life becomes increasingly focused and simpler. The distractions drop away. The priorities become crystal clear.
When you are pulled by what you want and what drives you, that’s intrinsic motivation and freedom.
You no longer operate based on need but on want and desire.
Instead of waking up tomorrow to the To-do list, why not lace up your proverbial sneakers and take off toward something compelling?
I often need a reminder, like Maria’s post. Having read it, I took stock in my life of what I’m running towards and what I'm not.
I have evidence in my life that when I’m compelled towards something, my life improves.
I was compelled to run towards a new chapter early in my career. I worked at Time Inc. Corporate Marketing when I received Martha Stewart Living's launch issue. I dove into every page with a thirst for more. On my personal stationery, I hand-wrote a note to the Publisher asking for an interview in their marketing department. I’d never written a note like it before.
I received a handwritten note back. In his beautifully scripted handwriting, he replied, NO.
Those of you who know me know I worked for Martha for nearly 20 years. I was compelled to turn that no to a yes.
If you want the full story of how that no turned into a yes, you can hear about it on the When She Spoke podcast HERE.
My future then and my future now is mine to create.
If I'm on this planet for another 30 years, damn it, I want to make it great.
Look back and see where your inner energy took over to create a new chapter that wouldn’t have happened without you and your thirst for a new or better. I have an exercise in For Success Sake! that takes you on this journey in the Perfectly Miserable chapter.
Why not run toward the life you want?
Reconnect with that magic and create more of it.
Your running path forward starts with you deciding to invest in yourself, your dreams, and your true desires.
Especially for those of us in midlife. What about redesigning a new path forward? With fears and all, along with your wisdom of experience, to feel that feeling that happens when you give yourself permission and are deeply committed to yourself.
Stop forcing yourself to do anything you don’t want to do.
Time is precious, and it is ours for the making.
We all need something to run towards.
What will you run towards
This week
Before the end of the year

This is my challenge for you today.
