Survivorship, Sex, Menopause Care, and Healthy Aging

I remember that moment in my OBGYN’s office when she told me four words that blew me away…

“Grin and bear it.”

This is the woman who delivered my babies.

The women I trusted to help me feel better.

The woman I was paying for this visit.

Grin and bear it?!

This was one year after being diagnosed with AML Leukemia treatment and grueling chemotherapy treatment.

The chemo was not the worst of it. The side effects were.

Cancer had wreaked havoc on my mental and physical health, putting me deep into menopause.

Grin and bear it wasn’t going to cut it for me.

Survivorship is a term used for cancer patients during and post-treatment. When you think you’ve been through the worst, there is more.

But there are options.

It starts with advocating for yourself.

Doing research. Getting many opinions. Talking to others in the same space.

And then demanding what you need.

I was toxic to most doctors because I was at high risk having been through cancer treatment.

I was finally sent to an OBGYN Oncologist who asked me what I doing in her office.

I shared my story, and one week later, many of my symptoms dissipated.

One week later.

If you’re a woman experiencing menopause, you have many options.

I’ve learned so much from HerMD and Dr. Somi Javaid.

There are proven protocols to help women feel better, so they can live the life they want.

I fought cancer so I could live.

I will fight menopause, too, without the stigma or shame.

As a board member of the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation, I was honored to share my story at their women’s wellness event this April.

During the event, we celebrated the mission and work of the foundation and HerMD, a women’s healthcare brand supporting every aspect of women’s health.

I also had the pleasure of introducing the panelists at the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation annual luncheon, who discussed survivorship, sex, menopause care, and healthy aging.

We need to have more conversations like this one to bring understanding and education to women's health, aging and survivorship.
