It’s not how good you are that matters. It’s how good you want to be.

At a retreat I cohosted with a dozen dynamic and accomplished women, we got to know ourselves better in pursuit of creating our next Life Leap -- the finest version of ourselves yet.

Not even halfway through, one woman shared:

‘This is the first time I’ve felt like myself in 5 years.’

[Retreat: A period used to study quietly or think carefully (alone or in a group) away from normal activities and duties. Cambridge Dictionary]

We got to know how much we matter.

We often lose ourselves in our work, family, and commitments.

As children, we are asked what we want to be when we grow up.

Who do you want to become?

Well, we became.

We became high school graduates. We became college graduates.

We became high-achieving executives.

We became wives and husbands. Moms and Dads.

We’ve become children caring for elderly parents.

We've given a lot to others.

Time and time again, we put ourselves last; when we do, it can feel like we stop becoming.

Why is it so difficult to invest in ourselves when we've invested so much in our careers, family, and friends?

Instead, we fall into living on default.

It's easier to dig in and push down the feelings of wanting, the possibilities for change, or if we deserve something different.

When we resist, we stop becoming on purpose.

Simply recognizing this cycle is the first step to becoming again.

According to this recent NYTimes article, a sense of mattering is necessary for human flourishing, and there are steps that everyone can take to enhance it.

The article shares that people who feel like they matter experience more self-compassion, relationship satisfaction, and greater belief in their capacity to achieve their goals. A lack of mattering is associated with burnout, self-criticism, and anxiety.

When you take time to discover why you matter and who you are becoming, that's where the magic happens.

You can always become a better version of yourself.

That’s when you'll feel like yourself again.

This doesn't happen by chance.

Get off the hamster wheel of the every day.

Staying in procrastination or feeling stuck creates the thoughts: I don't know how. I don't even know what. Is this it?

Work with a coach. Attend a retreat. Journal as a practice.

Do what works for you.

Do it on purpose and with intention.

Investing in you is intentional. Set aside time to do the work: calendar it! Time just for you.

Start dreaming again to become the next version of the badass you are.
