How High Achievers Overcome Self-Doubt and Define Success
I had a dream job as the CRO of Fast Company, driving revenue for the business innovation media brand through multiple channels, including the magazine, website, video, and some pretty spectacular events. I worked with some of the most thought-provoking editorial pundits and met the most amazing people in business and Cher too!
But still…
I consistently thought that I needed to do more. Thoughts like...
Am I doing enough?
Is this enough?
Am I enough?
These are what I now call negative life sentences playing on repeat like a broken record.
The word enough plagued my daily inner thoughts.
Questions of personal doubt and despair. Questions around my self-worth. Questions that felt like life sentences of misery.
A coach once asked me for my definition of enough. Last week, I asked the same question while having coffee with a highly accomplished TEDx speaker on women's empowerment.
Just as I responded to my coach when she asked me what my definition of enough is, my coffee companion responded similarly: That’s a good question.
Enough keeps us battling with ourselves from a perceived place of not doing the best or being the best without knowing what best is.
Have you defined your enough?
I've spent time defining thoughts around enough to understand myself better, what I want, and what’s important to me.
I’ve turned those life sentences into purposeful journal prompts to help me get clear and intentional.
I am enough when…
It’s enough to do…
It’s enough when…
You know the saying: you can only manage what you can measure. When you don't create a measurement or set an outcome, something to reach for, you stay running on the hamster wheel named enough.
When the questions of enough creep in, as they still do for me, I get out my pen and have a conversation with myself to understand where it's coming from and where I want to go with it.
I hope you enjoy the beautiful and powerful The Knots Prayer below, which inspired this post. A client recently shared it with me. I’ve read it to clients and read it to myself dozens of times to help me listen to it, really listen to it, hear it, and see who I am inside of it.
Enough with enough!
This week, go do the big things that give you joy and impact. Be intentional, deliberate, and consistent about it using the definitions you've written.
You are enough.
I am enough.
