Handle Hard Better

A primary reason most people don’t achieve their goals is that they aren’t ruthlessly consistent with their time.

You start with big plans and motivation, but life takes over, things come up, and consistency falls off. You fall back into life on default.

Riding on the Peloton this week, I wasn't coming close to my best output. The negative voice in my head told me to push harder when I could barely keep up. I took a deep breath and slowed down, and my coach's voice gave me a reminder.

It was more important for me to be on the bike today than my total output Peloton score. It was more important to be in my routine and show up to exercise. The scores over time are what matter to my health and well-being. Not one day's effort.

Discipline and routine are far more important than a one-hit-wonder.

An extraordinary life is built on consistency.

With consistency, long-term goals are prioritized over one day’s achievement.

What you do every day is more important than what you do once a month or once a year.

Consistency is a dream-maker. Lack of consistency is a dream killer.

The compound effect of consistency is a lifetime of additive progress. I was adding to my health and wellness goals by committing to being on the Peloton.

Open next week’s calendar and look for where your consistency shows up. Look for your non-negotiables. Mine are exercise, Super Think time, and my five weekly success drivers. They are calendared before anything else.

What are your non-negotiables?

Where you put your attention is what you create, not in one day, but over time.

When a business struggles, is it due to a flawed strategy or execution? Any strategy is ineffective if it’s not backed by deliberate execution. Consistency in execution allows strategy the opportunity to win.

High achievers want to take big leaps for exponential growth. But the tiny, consistent steps set you up for exponential growth.

Consistency builds momentum and reduces friction, giving you more energy to advance and more opportunity to create the flywheel effect and that big leap.

Big goals have a greater opportunity for success with smaller bites.

At the end of last year, I gave a keynote at a large bank to 50 amazing women who lead teams, divisions, and themselves. The default of the day, their calendar, and their to-do list were the friction points to 10x-ing their whole-life goals. Becoming aware of what they wanted most (fulfillment was universal in the room) brought renewed importance to where they wanted to become more intentional and consistent.

If you want it to be easier, it is up to you because big hard goals broken down into smaller incremental and consistent actions will have you handling hard better.

This thought was powerfully shared by Kara Lawson, Duke University’s Women’s Basketball Coach.

Don’t get me wrong, life never gets easier. Life is hard, but with discipline, life gets easier.

Be the person who handles hard better.
