Becoming
What do you want to be when you grow up?
As a young kid, you were likely asked this question.
What do you do?
A common question in adulthood.
Who have you become?
A far more introspective question. What you do is about a title, career, or how you are spend your time, not about who you are or your identity.
Who have you become is a far more enlightening question for both the asker and the receiver.
I asked this question inside of my Success Unleashed course with 18 highly accomplished, capable, and dynamic women in midlife. They are redefining true success for the second and better half of the life they want to live.
Are we just one thing?
I’m a Mom.
I’m a Wife.
I’m a Success and CEO Coach.
I’m a Friend.
I'm a Creator.
I’m not Perfect.
I’m one of a kind.
In & Of Itself is a special streaming on Hulu. It was a transformative experience for me to watch. Mind-blowing.
“As much as I can say, I am this, I am that. I am all these different things, the moment that someone wants to flatten me to be one thing, they can. We have the ability to do that to one another. So as much as we want to be, ‘I am who I am. I’m all the different things,’ it is also true that we are limited by others' perceptions. And so both things are true at the same time. It’s acknowledging the paradox and recognizing it and our responsibility with it; that’s what matters,”
Derek DelGaudo
Star and creator, In & Of Itself
You may want to read that quote again. Each time I do, it gives me more to think and explore and understand.
As my Success Unleashed group is exploring who they have become and who they are becoming, they are uncovering what's possible beyond their resumes, titles, and their past because of who they are.
We are the narrators of our own stories. We get to write our life script.
Do not let someone flatten you into being just one thing.
Our identities are not singular. We are many things, unique, complex.
How you see yourself may be different than how others see you.
Keep that in mind when you see others as just one thing…it works both ways.
We put labels on people. When we do, we not only limit them, we limit ourselves.
When we allow ourselves and others to be many things, we change, evolve, and transform. We become.
There are so many more possibilities for us when we see and believe we are many things that uniquely define us.
I want to become the best that I can be.
I am one of a kind.
See me as I am.
Know I’m so much more.
